It’s the last month of winter, and we’re sending it off with a bang here in the Shire. We’ve got new restaurant openings, comedy nights and outdoor markets to keep you occupied as you wave off the last of the chilly weather and get ready to embrace spring. Here’s what’s on in the Sutherland Shire this August.
A Raffle We Can Get Around

New Opening Alert: Checho’s Cronulla
Checho’s has landed in Cronulla and is already drawing a crowd, bringing its cult-favourite tacos, Mexican share plates and signature Margaritas to the Shire. Expect $10 tacos with fillings like Beef Brisket, Secret Spiced Fried Chicken and Soft Shell Crab, alongside Corn Ribs, Mexican-Style Pork Ribs and Wagyu Scotch Fillet. The drinks are just as fun, with oversized cocktail handbags a crowd favourite.

Pull Up A Chair For Homer’s First Birthday Feast
Homer Rogue Taverna is turning one, and they’re celebrating the only way they know how: with one big Greek feast. Taking over a long table on Sunday, August 9th from 6:00pm, the night will bring a set menu packed with Homer favourites, ouzo on arrival and performances by the Sydney Greek Dancing School. Tickets are $85pp, so round up the group, come hungry and get ready for a proper birthday celebration.

Westfield Miranda’s Festival of Lights is lighting up Thursday to Sunday nights until Sunday, August 9th, with plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Running from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, the free event brings ocean-inspired illuminations, a Shipwreck Scavenger Hunt, glow face painting, fairy floss and live entertainment. Make a night of it with dinner, a wander through the lights and an obligatory Messina stop on the way home.
Head To Engadine For Two Community Favourites
There’s plenty happening in Engadine this August, starting with the Engadine Community Markets on Sunday, August 9th. Held at Engadine Town Square from 8:00am to 1:00pm, the boutique monthly market brings together local makers, small businesses, food and plenty of market finds. Make a morning of it, grab a coffee and browse your way through the stalls.
Then, the Engadine Street Festival returns on Sunday, August 30th, taking over Engadine Town Square from 9:00am to 3:00pm. One of the Shire’s biggest community days out, the festival will bring more than 200 stalls, gourmet food and drinks, live entertainment, performances, kids’ activities and plenty of local businesses to discover. Two very good reasons to put Engadine on the calendar this August.
Plan Your Week Around El Rey’s Winter Specials
El Rey is giving you a reason to head out almost every day of the week. Wednesdays bring $20 Birria Tacos and Birria Ramen, followed by $6 Tacos and $15 Tommy’s Margaritas on Thursday nights. Friday lunch includes a free wine with any main and half-price kids’ meals, while Happy Hour runs from Wednesday to Sunday with every cocktail just $14.
