Laidback coastal charm is the mainstay of this seaside town

Cupitt’s Estate, Ulladulla

While many flock to the rolling hills of Berry, the white sands of Hyams, or the slow but sure bustle of Milton, there’s a charm unique to Ulladulla that has it joining these fellow coastal towns at the top of our list.

Ulladulla is a short, two-and-a-half-ish hour drive from the Sutherland Shire, making it ideal for a weekend getaway, or a longer stay if your heart desires. Although it enjoys good food and watering holes of the same caliber of a bustling city, like many of its neighbouring towns, Ulladulla benefits from a picturesque location - right on the coast and not far from the quiet countryside.

But before you pack up your favourite ‘fits, swimmers and sunscreen, check out our list of 5 things to do and see in Ulladulla.

Cupitt’s Estate

Positioned back from the pristine shores of the beach, Cupitts Estate reveals the town’s quieter side. The family-owned, award-winning winery (also a wedding venue, ICYMI) lies beyond a rambling, bush-lined driveway, and it’s a site that would make country-, vino- and food-lovers alike weak at the knees.

Comprising a cellar door with a Euro-Tuscan aesthetic, restaurant, wine garden, and beautifully appointed accommodation, it’s the perfect spot to park up for a long afternoon that drags into the evening.

Featuring a seasonal menu curated by head chef Jonathan Pryor, the restaurant spotlights the best of local produce, including ingredients sourced from the on-site kitchen garden, in a repertoire that perfectly complements the wine. Speaking of - although award-winning, the wine found at Cupitts is accessible and drinkable, spanning bubbles and rosé to deep, serious reds, making it equally perfect for sundrenched sips overlooking the Estate’s view or whisked home to be enjoyed with friends. You can stay for the afternoon or stay a while in the luxe, architecturally designed on-site Villas, or in the larger, four-bedroom Farmhouse.

Hayden's Pies, Ulladulla

Hayden’s Pies

Crispy, flaky pastry on top; a buttery cupped base; deliciously hearty fillings. Eaten in the car by the side of the road, or enjoyed as separates with tomato sauce and a side of mash and peas. However you consume them, whatever your filling of choice, pies are an Australian staple for a very good reason. If you’re a pie (or pastry) fanatic, it’s worth noting that the famous Hayden’s Pies is located in Ulladulla. This unassuming little shop is a family-run business established in 2003 and has steadily become a South Coast icon, producing faves like Chunky Steak and Mash Potato Pie as well as spins on classics such as Butter Chicken Pie served with Mint Yoghurt.

Collers Beach

Collers Beach

Hidden away between Mollymook and Rennies beaches lies Collers Beach, a petite, dog-friendly haven that enjoys the iconic bushy surrounds unique to the South Coast. It’s a hotspot for surfers, but is equally suited to a quiet stroll or lazy afternoon, summer and winter alike.

Milk Haus

Head over to Milton

Just down the road, quaint but far from quiet Milton lies between the coast and the quintessential South Coast hills. If Ulladulla offers the big-brand stores and convenience, Milton offers a boutique counterpart. Our favourite spots to shop include Spaces2538, Kindred Home Store, and Toka Ceramics. It’s also a town known for its eateries - you could spend every meal and drink out dining your way through the options. Must-hits include Milk Haus, Bar Yuki, Milton Hotel, and Altar Wine Bar. Or, if you’re on the go, Buerre Noisette Patisserie or Flour Water Salt.
