It’s a bit of an understatement to say that there was a shift in priorities in 2020. Spending more time at home than ever, we were forced to re-evaluate how we lived in our homes and inhabited every space, both indoor and outdoor. New DIY projects were born and those renovations that were often left for when we had more ‘time’ quickly made their way to the top of our to-do list.

With international travel still off the agenda and working from home the new norm, it’s never been more important to make the most of the place we call home. Along with the rise of home offices, backyards and outdoor spaces have become seriously valuable assets in 2021. A beautiful outdoor space can act as your own private sanctuary, “They should be aesthetic, functional and sustainable,” says Johnny Derwent, Site Design + Studios Director.

Botanica Lane Kirrawee

Site Design + Studios, based in Kirrawee, is a landscape architecture and construction company with the philosophy “to create places to live in and enjoy”. Operating for 22 years, Site Design offers full end-to-end landscape services from planning and design, through to construction and maintenance. To support their services, more recently Site Design opened a cool and bountiful plant store, attached to their Kirrawee office. Introducing Botanica Lane!

This huge warehouse-style store is a plant-haven. Those overwhelmed by the chaos of larger chain stores will find respite at Botanica Lane. Wander through the luscious space and browse over 100 plants and pots that line the isles.

“Botanica Lane has been a 20-year dream and specialises in indoor and outdoor plants and pots. Combining a design studio with a plant and pot store was something we always wanted to achieve. Additionally, Black Olive Cafe, located next door allows for an enjoyable few hours of plants, pots, food and coffee.”

“The Site Design Studio is situated in Botanica Lane and our designers can greet anyone that has any landscape design requests or needs.”

Botanica Lane has a loyal following of the plant-obsessed and we can see why.

“We laid out Botanica Lane so you are always surrounded by plants; it’s as much a store as it is just a really nice place to visit. We have two main lanes, the indoor and outdoor lane.

“You will always be greeted by someone who has a wealth of horticulture experience and the service will be one on one. We want people to feel comfortable and familiar in store so it’s like a second home. We offer plant and pot advice, can install larger landscape projects, fill large plant orders as well as Landscape design and consultancy.”

Botanica Lane has an expansive range of plants and accessories guaranteed to please any plant lover. From outdoor talking points to low maintenance indoor plants, the team at Botanica will teach you how to tend to your greenery like a pro.

“We have over 100 species in store, from indoor standards to rare plants, succulents, cactus and regular landscape plants. You will also find a range of herbs, citrus trees, hedges and more. We can fill any order request, even if we don’t have it in store.

“Further, we sell a large variety of pots, plant-related books, plant health products and stock The Balcony Garden range.”

Plants are not only an easy way to spruce up any space but can help with overall mental well-being, says Johnny.

“People are investing in landscape and starting to understand what good design can offer in regards to a considered spatial layout as well as how plants, in general, can benefit your mental health.”

Having won an extensive list of awards and often featured in magazines such as House & Garden, Grand Designs Australia and Outdoor Design and Living, we were eager to hear Johnny’s thoughts on the latest trends.

“One of the biggest trends lately which has probably developed out of the drought is a more considered hardy palette. One that can be minimal in water use but still look great. However trends are always changing and landscape is firstly dependent on site type (flat, steep), aspect (north, south, east, west) and budget.”
